Mano a Mano Response to Executive Order issued by Governor Bobby Jindal of Louisiana (NO. BJ 2015 – 8), the so-called “Marriage and Conscience Order”

Mano a Mano, a national professional organization of trilingual (English-Spanish-ASL) interpreters, supports diversity, inclusion, and equal treatment of all individuals. Unfortunately, Executive Order (NO. BJ 2015-8) issued by Governor Jindal goes against these ideals.

Mano a Mano will hold our biennial national conference in New Orleans on August 7, 2015. We choose to move forward with this conference despite the issuance of Governor Jindal’s Order. We aim to join in the fight for support of equal rights. The theme of our conference is Social Justice and the Role of Trilingual Interpreters, and this theme speaks directly to issues of inclusion, diversity, and equality among all members of our society. The theme also forces each of us to consider ways that we must be examples of social justice in our world.

We are encouraged by the response statements issued by the Mayor of New Orleans and business and faith leaders clarifying that religious freedom is not in danger and yet discrimination will not be tolerated in their communities. We look forward to engaging in productive discussions and positive growth in New Orleans on August 7th.

Mano a Mano es una organización profesional a nivel nacional de intérpretes trilingües (inglés-español-ASL), que apoya la diversidad, inclusión e igualdad de trato para todo individuo. Desafortunadamente, la Orden Ejecutiva (NO. BJ 2015 – 8) emitida por el gobernador Jindal va en contra de estos ideales.

Mano a Mano tendrá su conferencia bienal en Nueva Orleans el 7 de agosto del 2015. Decidimos continuar adelante con la conferencia a pesar de la emisión de la orden del gobernador Jindal. Aspiramos a unirnos en la lucha por el apoyo de la igualdad de derechos. El tema de la conferencia es La Justicia Social y el Papel de Intérpretes Trilingües, y este tema se relaciona directamente con cuestiones de inclusión, diversidad, e igualdad entre todos los miembros de nuestra sociedad. El tema también nos obliga a cada uno de nosotros a estudiar la manera en que debemos ser ejemplos de la justicia social en nuestro mundo.

Nos sentimos animados por las respuestas emitidas por el alcalde de Nueva Orleans y los líderes empresariales y religiosos aclarando que la libertad religiosa no está en peligro y sin embargo, la discriminación no será tolerada en sus comunidades. ¡Esperamos poder participar en discusiones productivas y un crecimiento positivo en Nueva Orleans el 7 de agosto!

We need Mano a Mano members to serve on committees!

Mano a Mano President

Dear Mano a Mano member,

We need YOU to serve on one of the various committees that serve Mano a Mano! We exist because of the hard work and effort of our members. Each one of us (including Board Members) does this work on a volunteer basis, but we all feel strongly about giving of our time, energy, and talents in order to advance the profession for our communities.

The list of committees is as follows (please click on the link below in order to obtain more information about each committee):

The current committees are:

  • International Committee
  • Membership Committee
  • Translation Committee
  • RID VIEWS Columns Committee

I will be seeking approval from the Board to add the following committees to the regular structure of the Organization:

  • Budget & Finance Committee
  • Policy & Bylaws Committee
  • Professional Development/Mentorship Committee
  • Social Media Committee
  • Student Committee

Please contact the Mano a Mano President (David Quinto-Pozos) directly at president@manoamano-unidos.org  if you would like to be considered for any of the committees. The amount of time involvement varies across committees, but plan on being available between 10-15 hours per month.

Dear Mano a Mano Board and membership,

It is with great excitement and anticipation that I write this brief letter!  As you know, we have recently completed the process of electing several new members to our governing board, and we have many tasks on our to-do list for 2012.  I will begin with the official news and briefly lay out the tasks that I believe we need to complete in order to strengthen our organization in 2012.

As can be seen in the column to the left of this text (or below it if viewing directly on the website), we have elected the following new members to our board: Martín Vásquez (Vice-President), Emma Shiver (Region III Representative), Caleb López (Region V Representative), Gina Wilkinson and Kristie Casanova de Canales (understudy) (Member at Large #2), and Carmen García (Translation Chair).  Congratulations to all of these individuals!  I look forward to working with them closely over the coming year and beyond.  Please congratulate your new Board members personally.

I would also like to take a moment to thank those members who have completed their terms of service on the board: Yolanda Chavira (outgoing Vice-President), Melva Flores Rodríquez (outgoing Region III Representative), Arlene Narváez (outgoing Region V Representative) , Ricardo Ortiz (outgoing Member at Large #2), and Saul Arteaga (outgoing Translation Chair).  All of these individuals have been instrumental in the progress that Mano a Mano has made over the years, and I thank them from the bottom of my heart.  Their willingness to be part of the governing board of this organization has impressed me.  Some of them have expressed interest in continuing to help with key tasks, and we will need their experience, insight, and motivation to continue our work.

The following are a few of the tasks that I plan to tackle this year:

  • review and revise our By-Laws, as appropriate
  • create a Standard Practice Paper for Trilingual (Spanish-English-ASL) Interpreting (in conjunction with the National Consortium of Interpreter Education Centers [NCIEC])
  • improve our membership connections and services
  • increase our membership
  • assist with the creation of an on-line directory of trilingual interpreting; hosted by Mano a Mano on our website
  • begin our fundraising efforts for the 2013 national conference

I will provide more details about each of these tasks as I call on key people to assist with the work that needs to be done.  We need EVERYONE to become involved in Mano a Mano in order to reach our goals as an organization.  We need YOU!
