BEI Trilingual Advanced Test Prep Workshop Presented by Purple Communications

Workshop Description

This workshop will be based on the information provided by the BEI trilingual interpreting guide. It will provide the opportunity to practice, improve and get feedback on skills such as voicing, expressive interpreting, and sight translation. Part 1 of the workshop will focus on the sight translation, expressive, and receptive parts. Part 2 of the workshop will focus on the three- person interactive. The purpose of this workshop is to expose new interpreters to the test structure, encourage interpreters to take the trilingual performance test, and improve current skills used by working trilingual interpreters.

Presenter Biography

Ruth de Jesus is a certified Trilingual Advanced interpreter. She has an Associate of Arts Language and Cultural Studies in Spanish and an Associate of Arts in English. She has worked in various types of settings such as VRS, medical, educational, and conference interpreting. Ruth has presented her trilingual workshops at TSID and TAHIT. She is currently the SIG Chair for the TSID Trilingual SIG and the representative for Region 4 for Mano a Mano.

A new job announcement:

Maple Communications Group ( is a Canadian agency that is based in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. We work with freelancers and contractors to deliver service to clients onsite and remotely via Video Remote Interpreting (VRI).

We are looking for one (1) ASL-English interpreter who is also familiar with Spanish for a recurring Spanish class at a university that occurs once a week on Thursdays from 3:30-4:30 pm EST (Eastern Standard Time) until Nov 29th. This training will examine the major dialects of Spanish spoken in the Americas and their manifestations in the Spanish spoken in the United States. The training will provide an overview of the key dialectal differences focusing primarily on pronunciation and lexical variation. The training will provide interpreters with strategies to recognize and assess dialect differences in Spanish.

Content Focus:

  • Introduce basic linguistic concepts as framework (descriptive vs. prescriptive language, language variation, linguists’ use of ‘dialect’)
  • Familiarize participants with the main dialects of American Spanish
  • Examine differences in Spanish varieties (phonological, lexical, regional vs. ethnic/cultural)
  • Review common ambiguities encountered in multi-dialectal interactions
  • Introduce strategies to recognize and assess dialect differences in Spanish

About the Trainer: Glenn Martinez PhD MPH, is professor of hispanic linguistics and director of the Center for Languages Literatures and Cultures at The Ohio State University. Dr. Martinez received a PhD in Hispanic Linguistics from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and an MPH in border health from the Texas A&M School of Public Health. His research focuses on the sociolinguistic dimensions of Spanish in the United States and language policy and practice in health care settings. He is the author of Mexican Americans and Language (U of Arizona Press, 2006) and Spanish in Healthcare: Policy, Pedagogy and Practice (Routledge, Forthcoming).

Mano a Mano, Inc. has a new website address!

As of July 8, 2018, visitors can now go to to reach Mano a Mano’s website. The original domain,, is still active and will automatically redirect to the new website. Email addresses for board members have also been updated accordingly.

The change comes with the organization’s several initiatives to revitalize its communication with the membership and the public. Our new URL goes with Mano a Mano Inc.’s presence on social media outlets, such as Facebook (manoamanoinc), Twitter (@manoamanoinc), and Instagram (manoamanoinc).

Other initiatives that the board of directors are undertaking include the creation of a Social Media Committee and a Website Committee — which were announced earlier on the Mano a Mano website — and the introduction of our YouTube channel. All the initiatives mentioned here aim to strengthen the organization’s presence on social media and the Internet. Announcing new Website committee


Mano a Mano is excited to announce the creation of the Website Committee! The Website Committee’s purpose is to provide accessible, informative and up-to-date information and resources regarding interpreting in Spanish-influenced settings via Mano a Mano Inc.’s public website. We are currently recruiting members who would like to join this committee. We are hoping that those who join will continue to serve for a minimum of 2 years.

Preferred skills/background:

  • Working knowledge of maintaining and managing an evolving and user-friendly website. Our website platform is WordPress.
  • Collecting data and making reports for the Mano a Mano Inc. board.
  • Developing web-related policies and standards, including those related to publishing.
  • Identifying and recommending web needs for the organization.
  • A willingness to research and learn independently.

We are also looking for a Committee Chair to head this group. The Website Chair’s duties include submitting a monthly report to the Board to demonstrate progress on the committee’s purpose. The Chair would work closely with our Webmaster.

If you are interested in joining this committee, please send a letter of interest to and include the following:

  • Your contact info (name, city/state, email address)
  • A brief description of your knowledge and skills related to website publishing and how you, specifically, would contribute to the committee and to promoting Mano a Mano Inc.
