THE STATE OF TRILINGUAL INTERPRETING: UNDERSTANDING THE WORK, MOBILIZATION AND LEADERSHIP

Abstract: The National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research reports that 2.2 million deaf and hard of hearing persons use ASL as their primary language. The 2000 U.S. Census Bureau reports that 12.9%, (53,448,479) of the nation’s population is Hispanic, with an estimated 286,000 ASL users. Yet, according to Mano a Mano (2010) there is only an estimated 500 working trilingual interpreters to meet this demand.

 

Experts in the field report that trilingual interpreting is growing rapidly; with 50% of WRIEC survey respondents indicating that at least 50% of their work is trilingual. Surveyed trilingual interpreters and others report that this setting carries a unique set of demands that includes understanding accents and dialects, hearing English, signing ASL and mouthing Spanish, reconciling multiple registers, and code switching. So specialized is this task that the Texas Trilingual Certification was established.

 

This presentation shares the lessons learned as gleaned from a 2010 survey of 35 working trilingual interpreters, from the WRIEC 2010 Trilingual Roundtable, and from the work conducted by the National Trilingual Task Force established in early 2011 by the NCIEC. The workshop will allow trilingual interpreter to become better acquainted, enhance their ability to talk about the work, better understand the tools and processes needed to mobilize as a community, and identify related short and long term goals.

Come join us for some fun, food, refreshments, mingling, and a discussion pertaining to the current status, and future goals, of Mano a Mano. Whether you are a Trilingual Interpreter who has worked in the field for years, a student who is learning both ASL and Spanish, or someone who has no ties to the trilingual world and who would love to find out more, you are welcome to join us! We will begin with a Zumba warm-up with Sabrina Patino followed by a bit of time to eat, drink, and connect with others. Then we will dive right into a discussion regarding the current strengths and areas for development in Region III, a brainstorming session to come up with future possibilities, and a wrap-up discussion to identify plausible goals and ways of achieving them. Discussion will be moderated by [National] Mano a Mano Region III Representative, Emma Shiver.

Trilingual Certificate Program
Presented by: Esteban Amaro, NIC, EIPA 4.2, TX BEI: Trilingual Advanced
There is a large and growing population of D/deaf or hard of hearing people who are Latino and for whom the primary language spoken by their families is Spanish. This population often requires language services in ASL, Spanish, and English to fully participate in today’s society. The Trilingual Certificate Program was created to ensure that certified Trilingual Interpreters (ASL, Spanish, and English) meet the minimum proficiency standards. This workshop will provide an overview of the testing and certification processes. Participants will have the opportunity to take a mock TSP (Test of Spanish Proficiency) and performance exam. Resources will be given to attendees to become candidates for the certification.
-In order for participants to take full advantage of activities, having a working knowledge of ASL, Spanish, and English is recommended but not required.-

Esteban Amaro is a native of Chicago, Illinois, and proudly identifies himself as a COMA (Child of Mexican Adults). In 2005, he graduated from Columbia College Chicago with a B.A. in ASL- English Interpretation. He is a Trilingual (ASL, Spanish, and English) Interpreter and currently holds NIC, EIPA 4.2, and TX BEI: Trilingual Advanced. Esteban has also been awarded with Certificates in Simultaneous Interpretation from English to Spanish and Spanish to English from the University of Hawai’i at M?noa. As a freelance interpreter, he interprets in a variety of settings and is one of Columbia College Chicago’s part-time staff interpreters. He has also mentored ITP students from the Chicagoland area. He currently serves as the secretary for Illinois Mano a Mano and is very active in the Deaf Latino and Trilingual communities. Esteban loves to travel (especially to Hawaii) and meet new people.

Gallaudet Interpreting Service does not currently have a system in place for trilingual mentoring, and there are very few trilingual requests for work on campus.  The program would overall focus on one of four tracks: Legal, CDI-Deafblind, CODA, or ASL to Spoken English. However, if a trilingual applicant is accepted to the program, every effort would be made to pair the interpreter with a trilingual mentor and provide opportunities to work in a trilingual environment (based on the number of requests that are received).

The one-week intensive will focus only on one of four tracks: Legal, CDI-Deafblind, CODA, and ASL to Spoken English.  No training specific to trilingual interpreters will be provided.

Actualmente GIS no cuenta con un sistema de tutoría (mentoring) trlingüe y son muy pocos los intérpretes trilingües que trabajan en el sitio (campus) de la universidad. En general, el programa se enfocaría en uno de los siguientes cuatro temas: Jurídico, CDI-Sordo/Ciego, CODA, o ASL a inglés hablado. Sin embargo, si aceptamos a un solicitante trilingüe al programa, haríamos todo lo posible para que ese intérprete pudiera tener a un preceptor (mentor) trilingüe y proporcionar oportunidades de trabajar en situaciones trilingües (dependiendo de los pedidos que recibamos).

La semana intensiva enfocará únicamente en uno de los cuatro temas: Jurídico, CDI-Sordo/Ciego, CODA, y ASL a inglés. No habrá formación específica para intérpretes trilingües.
