This session will familiarize participants with the general format, content, and evaluation criteria used in the exam. DHHS wants to ensure participants become thoroughly familiar with the test and the testing process so that only your language and interpreting proficiencies determine your test performance.Yolanda Chavira BEI  Level III; Trilingual Master Certification; A.A in Para-Professional Interpreter for the Hearing Impaired; Coordinator of activities for the Trilingual test development and is previous VP of Mano a Mano. She serves as the first TSID Trilingual SIG Chair. She holds a Treasurer position with the board of the Texas Trilingual Chapter and is the TSID Leadership Training Team leader, National Task Force member on Trilingual Interpreting, National Consortium of Interpreter Education Centers.

GURIEC UnderservedMentorshipProject Funded by GURIEC, at no charge to participants August – May, 2012

GURIEC will provide each mentor and mentee:
  • 10 months of mentor training under Betty Colonomos,
  • Bilingual Mediation Center, Inc.
  • lodging for mentors attending the onsite training session (shared accommodations with 1 other participating mentor (2 queen beds). Mentors may elect a single room and cover their own lodging.
  • a 4 GB thumb drive
  • RID CEUs (2.5 CUEs for mentors; 1 CEU for mentees)

All applications will be reviewed by the GURIEC and the Bilingual Mediation Center staff. Preference will be given to individuals meeting the following criteria, on a first come, first serve basis.

MENTOR SELECTION CRITERIA

  • Certified interpreter and member in good standing with certifying organization
  • Minimum of 10 years work experience (varied settings)
  • Demonstrated commitment and willingness to share interpreting experiences to be used for demos during training

MENTEE PROFILES

  • Identify self as underserved with justification for satisfying this requirement
  • Preference given to working interpreters
  • Certified interpreter, graduate of an Interpreter Education Program, or three letters of recommendation verifying you are working towards certification
  • Clearly expressed goal and commitment to increase skills and knowledge as an interpreter

The Underserved Mentorship Project is a pilot program designed to serve mentors and mentees that are part of populations such as racial and ethnic minorities or residents of rural areas who are typically underserved by interpreter education programs and face barriers to interpreter education activities or training events. The Gallaudet University Regional Interpreter Education Center (GURIEC) will sponsor one mentor and one mentee from each state in the GURIEC region (AL, DC, DE, FL, GA, KY, MD, MS, NC, PA, SC, TN, VA, and WV) for participation in this program. The ten month program includes one face-to-face training session for mentors from August 24-26, 2012 at Gallaudet University, followed by online sessions for both mentors and mentees, and meetings at a distance between mentors and mentees. Mentors will earn up to 2.5 CEUs and mentees will earn up to 1 CEU for this learning experience.
Requirements: Mentors and mentees must:
  • have a computer
  • have a webcam
  • have access to high-speed internet service for video meetings
  • be willing to travel at their own expense to Gallaudet University in Washington, DC for 2.5 days for a face-to-face training session (mentors only)
