Trilingual Interpreting Survey!

Gallaudet University Regional Interpreter Education Center
New Survey for Trilingual Sign Language Interpreters

Are you a trilingual interpreter who uses Spanish/English and ASL?
Do you have tow or more years of active experience working in trilingual settings?
If so, we invite you to participate in a survey focusing on trilingual interpreting — the knowledge, skills, and abilities needed for successful interpreting.
The survey is being conducted by the National Consortium of Interpreter Education Centers.
Additional information about the survey

Survey Icon The National Consortium of Interpreter Education Centers (NCIEC) has established a National Trilingual Interpreting Task Force to further the trilingual interpreting profession. The overall goal of the Task Force on Trilingual Interpreting is to increase the number of qualified interpreters able to interpret between English, American Sign Language (ASL) and Spanish by enhancing leadership, determine effective practices around trilingual interpreting, and providing educational opportunities and related resources. A critical component is the identification of the competencies and skills needed to successfully interpret in trilingual settings. one method for doing this identification is through conducting surveys.

We hope that you will read the attached invitational letter which contains the survey link, then participate in the survey, and distribute this information to other interested interpreters.

Understanding Healthcare Interpreting-input needed!

Dear Interpreter,

You are invited to influence the future of healthcare interpreting!

We are writing to you because you are a member of RID and, if you have experience in healthcare interpreting (any amount of experience), we would like to invite you to participate in a very important project about the work of healthcare interpreters. Our names are Laurie Swabey (Professor of ASL/Interpreting and CATIE Center Principal Investigator) and Andrea Olson (Department Chair and Associate Professor of Psychology, and CATIE Center Evaluator).

The purposes of this survey are to gain a better understanding of the work of healthcare interpreters, identify the various titles used for/by healthcare interpreters, and describe the similarities and differences in healthcare interpreting positions among a national sample of healthcare interpreters. This is an important opportunity to describe the work of healthcare interpreters.

These data will be used to better educate interpreters working in healthcare settings.  For the purposes of this project, “healthcare” includes physical health, mental health, and dental health.

If you decide to participate, you may enter your name on a separate page (not linked to your anonymous survey responses) for a chance to win either a registration for the National Symposium on Healthcare Interpreting to be held in July 2012 at St. Catherine University, or a free copy of the new volume In Our Hands: Educating Healthcare Interpreters (Swabey & Malcolm, 2012) published by Gallaudet University Press.

If you are interested in sharing your experiences about healthcare interpreting, please click on the following link, which will take you to more information about the study and to the survey. The survey should take approximately 30-40 minutes to complete. You may complete the survey in more than 1 session. Please complete the survey by Friday, June 15.
