Trilingual Interactive: Part 2

Presented by: Melva Flores

(Presented in English)

This workshop will focus on how to effectively interpret in a situation where you are the only interpreter who is interpreting from/into three languages (English/Spanish/ASL). You will understand the importance and dynamic of Trilingual Interactive. Interpreting scenarios will be discussed in which different effective techniques will be presented according to the scenario. A discussion about the difference between interpreting bilingual/trilingual will take place. Including but not limited to: cultural dynamics, seating, interpreting process and difference in lag time. There will be hands-on skill building activities suitable for both beginners and advance interpreters. Participants will be given resources to further their skill set.

Melva Flores is of Puerto Rican descent, first generation born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. She received her B.A. in ASL-English Interpretation from Columbia College Chicago in 2000. While in the program she interpreted for Deaf Latinos in need of a Trilingual (Spanish, English, ASL) interpreter. Melva has been interpreting for 12 years and holds a CI and CT National Certification from RID. She has interpreted in a variety of jobs in the community, including but not limited to, mental health, education, religious, conferences, and medical. She often interpreters interactively between her three languages (Spanish, English, ASL), where she is the only interpreter present and interprets into/from all three languages either consecutively and/or simultaneously. She is currently the staff interpreter for the Chicago Hearing Society and a Trilingual Video Interpreter for Sorenson Communications. Her passions are interpreting for Deaf Latinos, seeking professional development, and seeing the Trilingual profession grow.
