Faculty vacancy announcement: SpanishThe Dept. of World Languages and Cultures is seeking candidates for a regular, full-time 9-month tenure track appointment to begin in the fall, 2013.
Qualifications:
Ph. D. (or doctoral candidate) in Spanish or a related field, such as Latin American Studies, Cultural Studies, Education, TESOL, Linguistics, or Sign Language Interpreting;
b) Native or near native fluency in Spanish in its written form as well as ability to communicate in written academic English. Preference will be given to applicants with a working knowledge of American Sign Language (ASL). Those without sufficient competence in ASL will be required to undergo ongoing training starting in the summer preceding appointment. Competency in ASL will be required for tenure;
c) Ability to teach a foreign sign language and prior experience with a Deaf community abroad are highly desirable. Candidates with an ability to teach French as well will also be given special consideration;
d) An interdisciplinary outlook on education and a willingness to participate in and design interdisciplinary courses to be co-taught within the framework of the University’s general education program;
e) Experience supporting study abroad programs and/or availability to accompany student groups abroad;
f) Demonstrated experience as a successful language teacher;
g) Demonstrated commitment to scholarly work in area of expertise.
Responsibilities:
Teach and design courses in Spanish language, literature, and culture at all levels;
b) Contingent upon institutional needs, teach and design courses for the University’s interdisciplinary General Studies program;
c) Contribute to the Department’s study abroad programs and international internships in Spanish-speaking countries, placing and advising students in international internship positions, and designing new learning and professional growth opportunities for students while abroad;
d) Contribute to the growth of the Department into areas, such as foreign sign language, International Studies, or Latino Studies;
e) Demonstrate a profound commitment to high-quality teaching and an interest in developing innovative pedagogical strategies;
f) Actively engage in scholarly activities consistent with area of expertise and Department’s mission;
g) Assist the department in fulfilling its mission, particularly with regard to student recruitment and retention and provide service to the profession, the University, and/or the Department;
h) Continue to develop ASL competency and classroom discourse skills so as to function successfully in a bilingual (written English/ASL) environment.
