NCIEC is seeking experienced and motivated trilingual interpreters (ASL/Spanish/English) who would like to participate in a one-time Train the Trainer seminar.  If this is you, please read the information below.

Dear Trilingual Interpreter,

NCIEC has undertaken an initiative to enhance the quality, availability, and utilization of interpreters in Spanish-influenced settings. A key component of the initiative is to enhance the interpreting skills of trilingual interpreters toward the goal of trilingual certification. Over the past four years, the NCIEC Trilingual Task Force has worked hard to develop teaching materials based in evidence-based practice.

NCIEC is now pleased to announce the preparation of the final two components of this material development endeavor – 1) the expert review of the curriculum guide, and 2) the preparation of trainers to utilize the materials to enhance the skills of aspiring trilingual interpreters within their own communities.

NCIEC is seeking a pool of approximately 12 individuals who meet specific qualifications to participate in a four-day Train the Trainer seminar. Successful candidates will have their air transportation, lodging, and several meals provided in exchange for their participation. The dates of the seminar are January 23–26, 2015.

This invitation is very time sensitive and requires completion of a formal application that must be received no later than December 1, 2014. Late applications will not be accepted.

Best Practices in the World of VRI

Presented by: Arlene Narváez, CI, CT

Arlene Narváez, B.S., CI, CT works as a trilingual (ASL/ Spanish/English) interpreter in community and video settings with experience in both VRS and VRI. She has presented workshops at the regional and national level. In addition to working as an evaluator and interpreter trainer, she has previously served as Co-Chair for the Southern California RID Trilingual Committee and coordinated interpreters for Los Angeles Valley College. Currently she is a member of the NCIEC Trilingual Task Force.

This training will start with an overview of Video Interpreting, it will discuss the challenges and benefits of Video Remote Interpreting (VRI), and current best practices. The presenter will illustrate the difference between on-site interpreting and VRI. A Video Interpreter must understand the unique aspects of working via video, identify their professional needs, and identify the client’s communication needs while approximating the on-site interpreter experience. Discussion will focus on the issues that impact the work and current best practices of Video Interpreting. Activities will focus on identifying issues, managing the video call, and include interactive practice.

When Knowing Three Languages Isn’t Enough

Friday, April 25, 2014, 9am-5pm and Saturday April 26, 2014, 9am-8pm

This workshop is designed for the working trilingual interpreter Intermediate/Advanced Level of ASL and Spanish is required

This intensive highly interactive two-day trilingual ASL/Spanish/English is geared toward the experienced trilingual interpreter. Discussion will focus on domains and competencies identified in current research. the demands and controls of working in community and video settings, and the impact of dialectical and cultural differences. Activities will focus on memory building, Spanish language building, interpreting in video settings, and interactive trilingual assignment practice. Workshop will be presented in English with Spanish enhancements.

Registration fee includes lunch both Friday and Saturday and dinner on Saturday.
