Saludos Mano A Mano, Inc Members!

It is time for the Mano a Mano Board of Directors election for the 2021-2023 cycle. The Nominations and Elections Committee is requesting that you respond to the attached call for nominations. As members, YOU know your own commitment to supporting the work of trilingual interpreters and services to Deaf and Hard of Hearing families who require Spanish language services. Mano a Mano is a membership organization and needs the on-going, renewed support to both membership and leadership. YOU know the issues in your local communities, and that voice is needed in the process.  

Please consider running for office and self nominating or nominate other members who you know can take this organization in the direction to represent critical issues of our communities and liaise with other national and international organizations! Attached you will find the “Call for Board Nominations” document that lists the positions up for reelection this year, as well as the eligibility requirements for each position. If you would like to nominate yourself to a position, complete the nomination form on the last page of the document and send it to nominations@manoamanoinc.org, so that our committee members can review it. If you would like to nominate someone else, simply reply to this email with the name of the individual you would like to nominate and the position you are nominating them for and we will contact them to see if they accept the nomination. We kindly ask you to respond by October 25th.

From the CEO Search Committee

Hi! I’m Robin Horwitz and I am a member of the CEO Search Committee for RID. Today, RID is announcing the posting for the position of RID Chief Executive Officer. I will point out the details of the application process, selection process, and the anticipated schedule for the following months. 

Prior to the application deadline, all are given the opportunity to submit and ask questions pertaining to the CEO position and selection process. These questions will be collected and posted on the RID website as FAQs. All questions can be submitted to ceosearch@rid.org by August 3, 2019. Interested applicants should fill out the application, and provide a resume or CV. Applicants must also provide a letter of interest in both an ASL video and written English, including how the applicant meets each required qualification listed in the CEO job description. The deadline for submission of all applicant materials is August 10, 2019 by 11:59 PM (PST).

Materials will Materials will be reviewed by the CEO Search Committee once received. We expect to review them the third week of August, and video interviews with the applicants will be scheduled. The first-round interviews will be recorded for review purposes.

If selected, finalists’ previously submitted application materials videos will be shared with the three Councils: Diversity Council, Council of Elders, and Deaf Advisory Council. The committee will collect feedback from the aforementioned groups.  Finalists will then be selected by the search committee and invited for a second round face-to-face interview with the full RID Board of Directors on September 14, 2019.

At the conclusion of the interviews, the Board expects to make a decision within two weeks. The selected candidate will be offered the position, pending contract negotiation. When this has been completed, the Board will announce the new Chief Executive Officer of RID in the month of October. “Hola a todos.  Les comunica el presidente interino de Mano a Mano, Vernon León, desde Austin, TX con un mensaje un tanto personal.  Para que sepan, este mensaje se había escrito primero en español antes de ser expresado en este video en ASL. No tendrá traducción ni interpretación al inglés para este mensaje.

Este último fin de semana tuve la oportunidad de asistir al congreso anual de Street Leverage Live aquí en Austin, TX.  Ha sido mi primera salida al público como cabeza de Mano a Mano además de haber sido mi primera interacción con Street Leverage fuera de lo que se publica en su página web.  Les digo con toda sinceridad que no esperaba la magnitud ni la profundidad de las experiencias de este fin de semana. Realmente tuve momentos muy difíciles, incómodos, frustrantes, impactantes, complejos, pensativos, chocantes, despertadores, etc.  Los momentos más difíciles ocurrieron fuera de los salones y espacios designados para las preguntas y cuestiones “complicadas” o “difíciles”.

Es importante reconocer que la misión de Mano a Mano es “proveer una infraestructura para el acceso a los recursos para la interpretación trilingüe, apoyar el desarrollo profesional de los intérpretes trilingües y promover políticas apropiadas relativas a la proporción de la interpretación trilingüe”. Nuestra misión no incluye, en sí, la justicia social, el activismo político, los derechos latinos/hispanos, o ningún otro modo de activismo social. Pero nuestro trabajo no excluye la justicia social como el mar de fondo.  

Me siento realmente renovado y animado por todo lo que he aprendido y todo lo que he visto este fin de semana.  Yo sé que nuestro trabajo puede ser un poco técnico a veces con un enfoque en las destrezas lingüísticas y literalmente interpretativas que son necesarias y obligatorias para nuestra vocación.  Que no nos olvidemos del porqué de nuestro trabajo. Muchas gracias y espero con mucha anticipación todo lo que podemos hacer en el futuro.

Para terminar, quiero darle el más profundo agradecimiento a nuestro VP interno, Orlando Obeso, por haberme acompañado al congreso este fin de semana.  Tranquilizó muchísimo mis nervios. Además quiero agradecer a Street Leverage y sus entregados voluntarios quienes me invitaron a participar en el evento.  Muchísimas gracias! BYE!”

Hola, mi nombre es Vernon León. En la actualidad, soy el presidente temporal de Mano a Mano empezando desde el primero de febrero de este año. Quiero tomar la oportunidad para extender mis agradecimientos a Carmelo Falú que acaba de renunciar al cargo de presidente y ha servido por once años en diferentes responsabilidades. Su trabajo no sólo fue como miembro de la junta directiva sino también contribuciones al campo de la interpretación trilingüe. Carmelo también trabajó arduamente con otras organizaciones como RID, WASLI, el Council de Manos y muchas más. Muchas gracias. Lamentamos que Carmelo haya tenido que renunciar pero entendemos que nuestras vidas cambian y muchas nuevos asuntos aparecen sin esperarlos. Sin embargo, estamos muy agradecidos por todo lo que Carmelo ha hecho y mucho más por que él desea continuar trabajando con la junta directiva en el futuro. Quiero enfatizar que estamos muy agradecidos por su deseo de continuar colaborando con nosotros. Les daremos más detalles de la siguiente faceta de la organización. Además quiero confirmar lo que Carmelo mencionó acerca de la junta hasta el 31 de octubre de 2019. Sin embargo no tenemos intención de esperar sin hacer nada. Estamos resueltos a trabajar duro y alcanzar metas fijadas hasta el próximo otoño. De hecho, tendremos elecciones junto con un evento del cual les daremos más detalles pronto. Sabemos que este evento será para el tiempo del Halloween. Queremos estimular a la membresía a trabajar más con Mano a Mano y los invitamos a que asistan al evento que estamos programando. Vaya a nuestro sitio de internet constantemente y piense en tener una posición en la junta de Mano. Aunque sólo tenemos estas posiciones temporales, algunos de nosotros estamos interesados en las posiciones a largo plazo. Quiero reiterar nuestros agradecimientos a Carmelo. Estoy muy emocionado de trabajar como presidente temporal y espero conocer a muchos de ustedes en el futuro. Muchas gracias!
