THEME: Social Justice and the Role of Trilingual Interpreters

Social justice is about promoting a just society, challenging injustice, and valuing diversity. Interpreters are regularly faced with situations throughout their work and professional lives for which they must make decisions about social justice actions. We explore this topic and how it might apply to trilingual interpreting throughout this conference.

La Justicia Social y el Rol de los Intérpretes Trilingües

La justicia social se trata de promover una sociedad justa, desafiar la injusticia, y valorar la diversidad. Los intérpretes se enfrentan regularmente con situaciones a lo largo de su trabajo y de su vida profesional en que deberán tomar decisiones sobre acciones de justicia social. Exploramos este tema y cómo podría aplicarse a intérpretes trilingües y bilingües.

Dr. Carla García-Fernández

Born in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Carla holds a doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction: Cultural Studies in Education, from the University of Texas at Austin, an M.A. in Language, Reading & Culture: Bilingual & Multicultural Education, from the University of Arizona, and a B.S. in Home Economics: Child Development, from Gallaudet University. Carla’s research interests center around racial and cultural identities, social justice in education,critical race studies, and multilingual/multicultural education.

Dra. Carla García-Fernández

Nacida en Santa Fé, Nuevo Mexico. Carla tiene un doctorado en Instrucción y plan de estudios: estudios culturales en la educación de la Universidad de Texas en Austin. También posee una maestría en Idiomas, lectura y cultura: en educación bilingüe y multicultural de la Universidad de Arizona. También obtuvo un grado en economía del hogar: desarrollo infantil de la Universidad Gallaudet. Carla se ha interesado en la investigación de identidades raciales y culturales, en la justicia social en la educación, estudios importantes de la raza y educación multilingüal y multicultural.

Lillian García Peterkin, Keynote Speaker

Born to Puerto Rican parents in New Haven, CT, Lillian graduated from the American School for the Deaf in 1981. She received a Bachelor’s degree in ASL/English Interpreting from Northeastern University in 2001.

As Communication & Outreach Coordinator of the National Interpreter Education Center (NIEC), Lillian facilitated communication and reporting. In addition, she was an active member of both the Deaf Interpreting work team and Deaf Advocacy Training work team.

Lillian has presented trainings to Deaf community members on topics such as medical interpreting, Deaf interpreting, and consumer rights to interpreting services. She is currently on long-term disability leave due to battling cancer. Lillian is proud to have two young girls and is currently living in Hamden, CT.

Lilian García Peterkin – Ponente Invitado

Nacida de padres puertorriqueños en Nueva Haven, CT. Lilian se graduó de la escuela Americana de sordos en 1981. Recibió su grado en interpretación entre Inglés y lengua de señas Americana de la Universidad de Northeastern en el 2001. Ha trabajado como la coordinadora de comunicación y alcance para el centro nacional de educación para intérpretes (NIEC por sus siglas en inglés) por ocho años donde ha facilitado comunicación y se reporta a los Centros del Consorcio Nacional para la Educación de Intérpretes (NCIEC por sus siglas en inglés). Tambien fué un apoyo constante para el equipo de intérpretes sordos y para el equipo de entrenamiento de trabajo para la defensa de los sordos. Lillian ha entrenado miembros de la comunidad sorda en muchos temas como interpretación medica, Interpretación de sordos, y los derechos y servicios de interpretación de los consumidores sordos. Antes de trabajar para el NCIEC, Lilian fué coordinadora de servicios de interpretación por diez años en Massachussetts and Connecticut donde supervisaba, buscaba y enseñaba intérpretes. En la actualidad no está trabajando debido a su batalla contra el cancer.

Arlene Narváez, B.S., CI, CT

Arlene works as a trilingual (ASL/Spanish/English) interpreter in community and video settings, with experience in both VRS and VRI. In addition to working as an evaluator and interpreter trainer, she has presented numerous workshops at the regional and national levels. As a member of the NCIEC Trilingual Task Force she participated in the development of the NCIEC Working in Spanish Influenced Settings DVD resource material and Curriculum Guide.

Arlene Narváez, B.S., CI, CT

Arlene es una intérprete trilingüe en la comunidad y en los espacios de video llamadas con experiencia en VRS y VRI. Ademas de trabajar como evaluadora y entrenadora de intérpretes, ella tambien ha presentado muchos talleres a nivel regional y nacional. Como miembro de un grupo especial en el NCIEC, Arlene participó en el desarrollo del DVD y la guia de estudios para situaciones de interpretacion trilingüe.

Rafael Treviño

A native of Florida, Rafael is the Program Coordinator of the Sign Language Interpretation Program at Miami Dade College. He is a certified Spanish-English interpreter by the FL Court Interpreter Certification Board and as a trilingual interpreter by the Texas BEI (Trilingual Master). His goal is to help foster a new generation of leaders in the interpreting community.

Rafael Treviño

Nacido en Florida, Rafael es el coordinador del programa de interpretacion en lengua de señas en la Universidad de Miami dade. El tiene una certificación como intérprete de español a inglés del juzgado de Florida y una certificación trilingüe del Texas BEI. Rafael tiene como meta ayudar a forgar una nueva generación de lideres en la comunidad de intérpretes.
